SEA SCOUTS
Shackleton Sea Scouts for over 60 years has been strong in the seafaring traditions of Sea Scouting in Whangarei, Northland. The group is part of Scouting NZ, which include the traditional skills taught for camping, tramping and survival but also water activities such as sailing, rowing and kayaking.
Both boys and girls from Year 1 to Year 13 are members, with age groups divided into Keas, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers.

Activities are held at the Den, 52A Riverside Drive Whangarei, all school weeks and during the summer terms, the Sea Scouts take part in local and national regattas and events. We offer a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment to the young people of Whangarei, where they can develop their love of adventure on both land and water, but with an emphasis on sailing and rowing and of course, having fun!
PROGRAMS
Weekly meetings

Keas meet on Wednesdays from 5.30pm to 6.30pm

Cubs meet on Tuesdays from 6.30m to 8.00pm

Scouts and Venturers meet on Mondays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

As a parent you are always welcome to the Group meetings and events where you will be able to see your child’s progress as well as share in the fellowship of our Scout group.
Subscriptions:
Keas $95 p/term
Cubs $110 p/term
Scouts/Venturers $110 p/term
A 10% discount applies to fees paid in full for the year where these are paid by the end of the third week of the term.
For those with more than one family member in the group, the term fee for the second and subsequent family members is reduced by $20 each

Scouting is a worldwide movement with over 32 million members in 160 countries. The main focus is the development of of young people so that they reach their full potential and take a constructive part in society. There is the philosophy of learning by doing, with emphasis on outdoor activities such as tramping, skiing, and kayaking. WHAT IS SEA SCOUTS?

We are fortunate enough to be blessed with a geography and lifestyle in this country that is well suited to water activities and it is in this environment that Sea Scouting thrives.
The Sea Scouts are a branch of Scouting NZ and use the maritime environment to deliver a range of water based activities to provide a safe, fun, challenging experience and adventurous programme in which to develop important life skills for their members.
While much of the activity is based around the maritime environment, most Sea Scout groups still do a full range of the traditional land activities based around camping and tramping and the resulting programme tends to be full and varied.
While the Sea Scout programme varies between groups and around the country depending on skills and resources available, it tends to follow a similar structure, much of which is based around a progressive badge scheme, local and national regattas and relationships with local boating clubs and associated maritime industry.

As a not-for-profit, community based organization, Shackleton Sea Scouts relies on volunteers, fundraising, grants and the generosity of sponsors and supporters to continue to be able to provide our programmes and activities.
We encourage parents, grandparents and other family members to get involved with their children and assist where they can. Our Scout Group is only as good as the people who step up to be involved so please come aboard! There are many big and small jobs and roles you can do. If you are not able to help out in a role, then please be aware we depend upon participation from parents during fundraising events and working bees.
